CO 119 BRT Branding & Wayfinding Project

CO 119 BRT Branding & Wayfinding Project

Bikes, Buses, and Bold Design

Commuting Solutions, in partnership with the City of Boulder, Boulder County, the City of Longmont, CDOT, and RTD, has completed an exciting project that created a unique corridor brand to accompany new infrastructure being constructed along CO Highway 119.  The CO 119 Safety, Mobility, and Bikeway Project will transform the corridor with a separated bikeway and efficient Bus Rapid Transit Service, promising a dynamic transportation experience!

Wayfinding and Branding Mission

Our mission is to provide travelers with a seamless and user-friendly journey through the updated corridor. The brand attributes we’ve developed will be showcased on first and final mile wayfinding signs, BRT station architecture, and other key elements along CO 119. Get ready for a fresh commuting experience that combines functionality with a sense of place!

Construction is expected to be completed in spring of 2027. These elements will also inform and apply to future infrastructure and multimodal connections in the northwest metro region. See below for a sneak peek at the designs, and stay tuned for updates!

CO 119 Branding & Wayfinding

Why Wayfinding?

Implementation of branded wayfinding signs and markings along a BRT corridor facilitates enhanced connectivity for the First and Final Mile of transit trips, which are often the hardest miles to navigate, especially in suburban communities that were originally designed for personal vehicles. Limited connections and long walking distances are just a couple of factors that can make it difficult to reach a final destination. Branded wayfinding signs make it easier for residents, employees, and tourists to navigate the region via walking, biking, and taking transit. This project builds on recommendations from the CO 119 First and Final Mile Study to connect people with places through signage that is simple, inclusive, and predictable.

Sneak Peek: A New Look for the Diagonal

Major improvements are coming to the corridor between Boulder and Longmont. RTD’s BOLT service will be replaced by the Diagonal Flyer, a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service designed to deliver faster, safer, and more reliable regional travel. Alongside it, the 9-mile Diagonal Bikeway will offer a fully separated, seamless route for cyclists.

These final design recommendations were shaped through extensive collaboration among Commuting Solutions, Consor Engineers, Studio Six Design, and local municipalities. Robust community engagement—including bilingual online surveys and in-person pop-ups—ensured the project reflects the needs and perspectives of corridor residents and workers.

Building on the success of RTD’s Flatiron Flyer along the US 36 corridor, the Diagonal Flyer and Diagonal Bikeway will feature the same bold blue and gold branding. Transit stations and wayfinding will echo this modern, minimal aesthetic, blending clean architectural elements with inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape.

We’re excited to bring this fresh new look and improved mobility experience to the Highway 119 corridor.

The second picture is a gold background with outline of native plants, third picture shows a sign with directional arrows pointing to Boulder, Diagonal Flyer, Village at the Peaks mall, and the last picture is a rendering of a bus rapid transit station along CO 119.

Key Outcomes

  • A corridor brand (including logo, station architecture conceptual concepts, and marketing strategy) that has been informed by stakeholders and community members.
  • A family of signs reflecting the CO 119 brand that are easily recognizable and will cohesively connect the communities along the corridor.
  • Final wayfinding design plans including sign locations, sign details for each sign type, a sign message schedule, and an opinion of probable cost for the wayfinding routes within one mile of each station/activity center along the CO 119 corridor.
