About South Boulder Road

Commuting Solutions played a key role in completing the Northwest Area Mobility Study (NAMS), which identified South Boulder Road as one of six priority corridors for future transportation and regional mobility improvements.

South Boulder Road is a vital 9.5-mile east–west connection linking Boulder, Louisville, and Lafayette. It serves 50,000 nearby residents and nearly 20,000 jobs, providing access to diverse land uses, businesses, and multiple travel modes along the corridor.

South Boulder Road Corridor Study

South Boulder Road was included in the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) 2050 Regional Transportation Plan as a future corridor planning project.   Based on a nomination by Boulder County, it was then selected for additional study through the DRCOG pilot corridor planning program.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), in conjunction with other stakeholders, including City of Boulder, Boulder County, City of Louisville, City of Lafayette, and Regional Transportation District (RTD), led a corridor visioning study for South Boulder Road. Through a series of community engagement activities, consensus was developed toward a shared regional vision for the future transportation needs of South Boulder Road.

  • Spans 3 cities: Boulder, Louisville, & Lafayette
  • 9.5 miles long
  • Connects Boulder, Louisville, and Lafayette
  • 755 (25 fata or serious injury) crashes on corridor (2017-2021)
  • 46,649 residents within 1 mile
  • 19,188 jobs within 1 mile

Completing the Study

A thorough assessment and analysis of the corridor was performed, including demographics, roadway and traffic operations, transit service and infrastructure, multimodal infrastructure, right of way estimates, evaluation of crash history, and a travel pattern analysis.  These findings, in addition to extensive community outreach efforts, were taken into consideration to form the comprehensive corridor-wide and segment-specific recommendations found in the final study.  Corridor wide recommendations included:

  • Connected and improved bikeway
  • Enhanced transit speed, reliability, and frequency
  • Minimal impacts to multimodal during construction.

Segment-specific recommendations include an impressive level of detail. We are incredibly grateful to the study team for their dedication to completing this comprehensive report.

The Final Corridor Vision

Create a forward-looking transportation framework that prioritizes safety and mobility for all people traveling on South Boulder Road and Table Mesa Drive between Boulder and Lafayette.

  • Address current and future travel demands.
  • Improve multimodal connectivity to, from, through, and across the corridor.
  • Improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.
  • Optimize transit performance (travel time, reliability, frequency, bus stops).
  • Serve the contexts of adjacent community
